L-Theanine, ranked by what actually calms the alpha waves.
L-Theanine is the amino acid from tea leaves that promotes alpha-wave brain activity — the same pattern seen during focused calm. The form (free-form L-isomer vs Suntheanine-branded vs combo with magnesium) and the dose (100 mg vs 200 mg) determine whether you get a calm-focus effect or a sleepy crash. This page ranks 5 popular L-Theanine products available across the AU and TH pharmacy directories.

Product comparison
Compare 5 popular L-Theanine products on form, dose per capsule, absorption, GI tolerance, and clinical-evidence score. Absorption 5/5 = highest alpha-wave bioavailability. Evidence 5/5 = most extensively studied form/brand.
Absorption 1/5 = lowest, 5/5 = highest alpha-wave bioavailability. GI tolerance 5/5 = placebo-level tolerability (L-theanine has near-zero GI side effects). Evidence 5/5 = most RCTs done on this specific brand/form per Williams 2016 systematic review.
Price column: entries marked "[price unavailable]" indicate the author could not confirm a USD retail price at write time (e.g. practitioner-only products, brand-direct AU/TH retailers that price in local currency). Use the retailer link to check the live price. We do not invent prices.
The 3 forms of L-Theanine, explained
1
Free-form L-Theanine
Standard form
Absorption: 4/5 · GI tolerance: 5/5
Cheapest per mg. The bioactive L-isomer of theanine (the form found naturally in tea leaves). Synthesized by fermentation. The form used in most clinical trials including Nobre 2008 and Einother 2013.
Not all generic L-theanine is the same purity — check that the manufacturer publishes a CoA (Certificate of Analysis). Suntheanine-branded has slightly more clinical studies specifically on it.
Best for: Daily stress support, first-time L-theanine users, anyone on a budget, when 200 mg/day dose is enough.
2
Suntheanine (L-isomer)
Branded pure L-isomer
Absorption: 5/5 · GI tolerance: 5/5
Suntheanine is a patented pure L-isomer (vs racemic DL-theanine sometimes sold as generic). The most-studied form (14+ RCTs specifically on Suntheanine). Higher purity eliminates concerns about D-theanine.
~2-3x more expensive per mg than generic L-theanine. Only useful if you specifically want the most-evidenced brand of L-isomer.
Best for: Practitioner-grade protocols, anyone responding weakly to generic L-theanine, the second choice if free-form Suntheanine didnt work.
3
L-Theanine + Magnesium combo
Stack form
Absorption: 4/5 · GI tolerance: 5/5
Synergistic effect: L-theanine for alpha-wave relaxation + magnesium for muscle relaxation and stress buffering. Single pill instead of two. Often cheaper than buying separately. Targets both mental and physical stress.
Lower L-theanine dose per pill (typically 100 mg) than standalone SKUs (200 mg). May need 2 pills/day to match standalone dose. Not ideal if you only want L-theanine effects.
Best for: Stress with concurrent muscle tension or sleep issues, anyone also taking magnesium, people who prefer combo products to reduce pill burden.
The Suntheanine distinction: Suntheanine is a patented pure L-isomer of theanine (vs racemic DL-theanine, which some cheaper products sell as "L-theanine" but actually contain a mix of L and D forms). The L-isomer is the bioactive form found naturally in tea leaves. Most modern supplements now use synthetic L-theanine made by fermentation — the molecule is identical regardless of source. Williams 2018 meta-analysis confirms that both generic L-theanine and Suntheanine produce similar alpha-wave effects in EEG studies when dosed equivalently.
How much L-Theanine do you actually need?
There is no RDA for L-Theanine — it is not an essential amino acid. The doses below are evidence-based ranges from RCTs cited in the references section.
Indication
Dose (mg/day)
Best timing
Acute calm (one-off stress event)
200 (single dose)
30-60 min before event
Daily stress support
200
Morning or split AM/PM
Sleep onset (latency reduction)
200-400
30-60 min before bed
Cognitive focus + calm (work/study)
100-200
With first caffeine dose (stack)
Anxiety (subclinical, daily use)
200 (twice daily)
Per Williams 2018 review
PMS mood / irritability
200
Continuous luteal phase
Source: Nobre 2008 (Asia Pac J Clin Nutr), Williams 2016 (Plant Foods Hum Nutr), Einother 2013 (Nutr Neurosci), Williams 2018 (Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr). L-Theanine can be taken with or without food — it does not require a fat-containing meal for absorption. The calming effect begins 30-40 minutes after oral dosing and lasts 4-6 hours.

Side effects & drug interactions
L-Theanine is one of the safest supplements, with virtually no side effects at the standard 200-400 mg/day range. The main consideration is blood pressure interaction.
Common (rare) side effects
Mild drowsiness (usually a benefit, not a side effect)
Headache (uncommon, usually at >400 mg)
Dizziness (very rare, typically low blood pressure related)
Nausea (extremely rare)
Appetite changes (very rare)
Drug interactions — monitor
Blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) — L-Theanine may lower BP further; additive effect
Stimulants (caffeine) — L-Theanine is intentionally STACKED with caffeine (the classic "smart drug" combo); no risk, but the calming may mask caffeine jitters you would normally notice
MAOIs and SSRIs — theoretical interaction but no documented cases; safe to use short-term
L-Theanine + Caffeine stacking: per Einother 2013 RCT, the combination of 100 mg caffeine + 200 mg L-theanine improves both speed and accuracy of attention-switching tasks compared to either alone, while reducing the jitteriness/heart-rate elevation of caffeine alone. This is the original use case and the only officially well-documented synergy. The combination is the active in matcha tea.
Pregnancy and lactation: L-Theanine is generally recognized as safe (GRAS by FDA in the US as a food ingredient) but there is no clinical-trial data on high-dose supplementation during pregnancy. Dietary intake from tea is fine. Pregnant women should avoid 200+ mg/day supplementation and instead rely on dietary sources.
